This shift isn’t forced or rehearsed; it arises organically as consciousness deepens. It’s not about suppressing preferences or pretending they don’t exist. Rather, it’s about witnessing them without attachment. You might still notice that one meal tastes better than another, or that one kind of weather feels more comfortable, but the emotional charge—the bias for or against—diminishes.

This state of neutrality doesn’t negate the ability to express feelings about situations or objects. Joy, sadness, appreciation, or aversion may still arise naturally. However, the inner dialogue changes. An object once deemed essential for happiness may now appear as just an object. A situation that would have previously elicited anger or frustration may no longer hold the same power.

How do we reconcile the existence of human atrocities and natural disasters within a spiritual framework that emphasizes oneness and unity? This question often challenges those who begin exploring nondual perspectives, where all phenomena, no matter how destructive or painful, are viewed as interconnected expressions of the same singular source. The nondual approach offers a radical shift in perception, one that dissolves the illusion of separation between events that we label as “good” or “bad” and invites us to see these occurrences as part of the grand play of existence.

Violent actions and harmful behaviours in the world, when viewed from a dualistic standpoint, can easily be categorized as manifestations of evil or wrongdoing. However, nonduality reveals that such acts emerge not from some inherent brokenness or malevolence, but from ignorance—a misunderstanding of our shared unity. This ignorance fosters the illusion of separateness, leading to behaviours rooted in fear, hatred, or selfishness. But when we awaken to the truth that there is no real division between self and other, the impulse to harm dissolves. The violence that once seemed so senseless is recognized as a consequence of an illusion. Healing, therefore, does not come through retribution but through awakening to the truth of our interconnectedness.

Natural disasters, often seen as chaotic or punishing forces, are similarly reframed. Rather than being viewed as random or cruel acts of nature, these events reflect the cyclical nature of the cosmos, expressions of impermanence and transformation. The suffering caused by such disasters, while profound, stems from attachment to the belief in permanence, the illusion that we can hold onto fixed forms in a world of constant flux. Through the nondual lens, even the most devastating natural occurrences are understood as part of the rhythmic dance of life, reminders of the ephemeral nature of all things.

What arises from this perspective is a deep acceptance of life’s paradoxes. The seeming contradiction of living in a world filled with both beauty and devastation, joy and suffering, dissolves when we recognize that all such experiences are expressions of a singular, undivided reality. This Ultimate Context is akin to a vast ocean upon which our individual lives are but transient waves. We are too often ignorant of its presence, absorbed in the details of our fleeting crests and troughs, beginnings, and endings. But our myopic vision deprives us of the understanding that our waves are inseparable from the larger, unfathomable expanse of the ocean—the Ultimate Reality.

Many philosophical traditions, such as Buddhism and Hinduism, refer to our preoccupation with personal content as an illusion—maya or samsara. This illusion stems from our inability to recognize that the seemingly separate, solid, and enduring ‘self’ we believe ourselves to be is just a wave on the ocean’s surface, part of the boundless, interconnected, and constantly changing Ultimate Reality.

Our inability to perceive this reality is often compared to a dream from which we struggle to awaken. Our ‘personal content’ may seem to us the full reality because it engrosses our senses and emotions, yet it is merely a fragment of the ‘Ultimate Context.’

Rediscovering the Ultimate Context

How do we reorient our focus away from our narratives to understand the Ultimate Context? Philosophies and spiritual traditions around the world suggest varied paths, from rigorous intellectual inquiry to deep meditation. Regardless of the method, the goal remains the same: to transcend the confines of our consciousness and recognize our union with the Ultimate Reality.

Practicing mindfulness and living in the ‘here and now’ is one approach that offers us the chance to step away from our content. Mindfulness offers a way to become aware of the ‘nowness’ of existence, to experience the world and ourselves as a series of interconnected, ephemeral phenomena. Through this process, we can gradually attune ourselves to the Ultimate Context.

The Potential Impact

Imagine what our lives would look like if we acknowledged the Ultimate Context. Our struggles, while not diminished, might be seen in a new light. We would recognize that we are not isolated entities combating a hostile universe, but integral parts of a vast, interconnected whole. This understanding could engender a profound sense of peace, compassion, and interconnectedness, transforming our relationships with ourselves, others, and the world at large.
