 A Journey Through Transformation

In 2018, Alex Garland’s Annihilation plunged viewers into a surreal and disturbing world, where the familiar dissolves into the unknown, and transformation is inevitable. Watching this movie back then, and rewatching it last night on Netflix, I found myself deeply moved by its haunting imagery and profound symbolism, which echoed my spiritual journey of Kundalini awakening. By delving into the film’s narrative and its vivid scenes, we uncover a rich parallel to the mystical process of awakening dormant energy within.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for those who haven’t seen Annihilation.

The Serpent Awakens

One of the most striking and unsettling scenes in Annihilation involves a soldier whose stomach is cut open, and we see his intestines move like a serpent inside him. This visceral image mirrors the ancient depiction of Kundalini energy as a coiled serpent at the base of the spine. In Kundalini traditions, this serpent represents latent spiritual energy, poised to rise and transform the individual. The soldier’s transformation, albeit grotesque, symbolizes the intense and sometimes chaotic nature of this awakening process.

Explosion and Rebirth

In another pivotal moment, the soldier explodes, leaving an intricate and eerie display on the wall. This explosion is reminiscent of the powerful release of Kundalini energy. Such energy can dismantle old patterns and structures, often causing upheaval before a new order can emerge. This scene captures the destructive yet transformative power of Kundalini, which breaks down the old self to pave the way for profound growth and understanding.

Kane’s Ultimate Sacrifice

Kane’s act of sitting cross-legged and detonating a grenade (played by Oscar Isaac) is another profound symbol. His posture suggests meditation or deep introspection, a practice central to awakening Kundalini. The ensuing explosion signifies a profound transformation—an act of self-destruction leading to rebirth. The image left behind symbolizes the remnants of the old self, giving rise to a new state of consciousness. This mirrors the death and rebirth cycle inherent in Kundalini awakening, where the dissolution of the ego precedes the emergence of a higher self.

The Shimmer as the Mystical Realm

The Shimmer, the film’s central enigma, serves as a metaphor for the mystical realm encountered during spiritual awakening. Within the Shimmer, reality bends and mutates, much like the inner landscape experienced during deep meditation and spiritual practices. Here, the boundaries of the self dissolve, and one is confronted with both beauty and terror—reflecting the dual nature of spiritual journeys.

Conclusion

Annihilation offers a hauntingly beautiful exploration of transformation, much like the journey of Kundalini awakening. Through its unsettling imagery and profound symbolism, the film invites viewers to contemplate the nature of change, the dissolution of the old, and the emergence of the new. By examining these parallels, we gain a deeper appreciation of both the cinematic experience and the spiritual process, enriching our understanding of transformation in all its forms.

Despite always wondering if anyone else had made this connection, I haven’t come across mentions of such interpretations. Yet, for me, the resemblance to my own experiences of Kundalini awakening is undeniable, providing a rich array of reflections on inner transformation. Only an individual who has gone through this process would truly understand these connections, as this is an event that must be experienced to be fully comprehended.

The God Beyond God

Transcending the Boundaries of Love

When speaking of God, we often resort to the most powerful language: love. We say, “God is love,” encapsulating the divine in a universally comprehensible and deeply comforting concept. But what if this notion, as profound as it seems, is merely a stepping stone to a deeper understanding? What if the God we believe to be love is but a veil, and beyond it lies a transcendence so vast and incomprehensible that it defies our very definitions?

In nonduality, we explore the essence of reality that transcends dualistic distinctions. Love, as we perceive it, is bound by duality—there is the lover and the beloved, the giver and the receiver. It is an experience of connection, an interplay between entities. But the ultimate reality, the God behind the God, dissolves these boundaries. It is an all-encompassing presence where subject and object merge, where the dance of love and beloved dissolves into pure being.

This transcendence challenges our deepest convictions. We find comfort in attributing qualities to God—love, mercy, justice—because it makes the divine relatable. Yet, these qualities are expressions within the realm of form. They are the waves on the surface of the ocean, while the God beyond God is the ocean itself, formless and infinite, embodying all potential yet transcending all manifestation.

To approach this understanding requires a journey beyond concepts, beyond the comforting boundaries of language and thought. It calls for a surrender to the unknown, a willingness to dissolve into the mystery. It is here, in the heart of this mystery, that we encounter the essence of nonduality. This is the ground of all being, where the distinctions between creator and creation, lover and beloved, God and self dissolve into a singular, ineffable presence.

In this state of transcendence, what we once called love is seen as a mere reflection of the boundless reality that underlies all existence. It is not a negation of love, but an expansion beyond it. It is an invitation to experience the divine not as an attribute, but as the groundless ground of all attributes. Here, we are not merely loved by God; we are immersed in the divine, where every breath, every heartbeat, every moment is a manifestation of the infinite.

To truly know God, then, is to venture beyond the familiar and the comforting. It is to embrace the paradox that the God we seek, the God we attribute with love, is but a shadow of the ultimate reality that transcends all attributes. This journey is not for the faint of heart; it demands the courage to let go of cherished beliefs and the humility to accept the limits of our understanding. But in this surrender, we find a freedom and a peace that surpasses all understanding, a union with the divine that is as boundless as it is profound.

A Serendipitous Encounter with Ken Wilber

Journeying Beyond the Veil of Reality

In the soft blush of dawn, I stirred awake at 5:40, surrendering to an hour of Yinnergy meditation before nestling back into slumber’s embrace. In my dream, I found myself standing amidst the familiar halls of a school with which I shared a work/community partnership. The peculiar morning sunlight bathed the main foyer where I found myself, the uncertainty of my presence there simmering in my mind—I had supposedly called in sick.

Attempting a swift, unseen exit, I brushed past the main entrance only to discover a quaint store tucked to the left. It served as my temporary refuge before I ventured forth into the daylight. To my amazement, the school’s parking lot had morphed into a sprawling mall parking, and my vehicle seemed to have vanished into thin air. A click on the car remote yielded a chirping sound, yet my car remained unseen. The chirps echoed eerily through the boundless maze of parked vehicles.

With resolve waning, I traced my steps back to the school. However, the once familiar school interior now sprawled before me as a vast complex, a labyrinth with countless sections awaiting exploration. As I delved deeper, descending a flight of stairs, I chanced upon a woman. In the realms of the waking, she was a librarian at the public library under another community partnership. But here, she had aged, her eyes lacking the spark of recognition. As I endeavoured to slip past unnoticed, our eyes met, casting a fleeting veil of fear over her face. The eerie thought of her calling the authorities hastened my escape down another stairwell.

There, I stumbled upon a colleague of mine, her lips spewing venom over the phone about another. The stark contrast between this avatar and her workplace demeanour was startling. I whisked myself away, leaving her unembarrassed in her secret slander.

The surreal escapade led me outside and then back into a stairwell, where fate unveiled a harrowing scene—a young mother, perhaps a teenager, with a newborn, suffered the misfortune of dropping her baby down the stairs. Accusations and exasperations filled the air, yet miraculously, the baby remained unscathed. The young mother’s stoic face stood as a testament to the resilience ingrained in the fabric of life.

The quest for my car resumed, turning futile until a gentle stranger extended his hand to aid in my search. Though unsuccessful, his kind gesture steered my way back to the library—a sanctuary that bore a resemblance to the one in my waking world.

In the quiet sanctum, I was warmly greeted by a former love. Our chatter soon took a magical turn as Ken Wilber, the revered philosopher, graced us with his presence. Recently, I completed a spiritually illuminating program under his guidance, hence his arrival felt serendipitous.

Our banter cascaded from the mundane to the mystical. With each shared thought, a strange familiarity wrapped around us. He voiced concerns about my serious demeanour, urging a smile. His inquiry into my spiritual saga met my story of awakening in 2008, which unfolded into the miraculous narrative of my life. Ken’s skepticism gradually crumbled, paving the way for a profound moment of connection.

With a gentle grasp, I held his face, our eyes serving as the conduit for the ethereal. An explosion of divine love, compassion, empathy, and bliss erupted within and around us, a phenomenon often described as satcitananda in ancient texts. The heavenly vibrations resonated through the library, igniting a flame of consciousness between Ken and me.

He sank to his knees, tears of profound realization streaming down his cheeks, echoing the eternal phrase “Aham Brahmasmi” – I am Brahman. His tears met mine as our cries of liberation filled the sacred space. This was an unveiling, a transcendence beyond the ordinary perception of reality.

As the new dawn caressed my waking eyes, my body curled into a ball, the reverberations of divine love still ringing through every cell. Tears of joy coursed down, without a drop to spare, as a celestial peace enveloped my being. Though bound within the ephemeral embrace of a dream, the profound spiritual dialogue orchestrated in that serendipitous encounter resonated through the ether, awakening a sublime reality nestled between the realms of the waking and the dream.
