The Uncharted Horizons Beyond Enlightenment

In the profound silence that follows the cacophony of seeking, what remains when the concept of spiritual enlightenment dissipates like mist at the rise of the sun? We often perceive enlightenment as the ultimate destination, a summit where the flag of our deepest self-inquiry plants its roots. But perhaps this pinnacle is not an end but a gateway, an opening to a landscape more expansive than the binary of enlightened or unenlightened.

Beyond enlightenment, the journey does not cease; it transforms. The seeker, who once scaled the mountain of self, now realizes that the mountain itself is but a wave in an ocean of consciousness. Here, in the boundless vista beyond enlightenment, the distinction between the seeker and the sought blurs and vanishes. The notion of spiritual progress, which implies time and measurement, becomes irrelevant in the face of a timeless being.

This post-enlightenment terrain is not about acquiring more spiritual knowledge or experiencing more profound states of meditation. It is a surrender to the simplicity of presence, where each moment is complete in itself, untethered from the ambition of reaching another. It’s an unlearning of the spiritual concepts that once seemed indispensable.

What awaits is a life lived in the fullness of emptiness, a paradoxical state where the wisdom of uncertainty is embraced. This is the wisdom that knows itself beyond forms and practices, identities and histories. In this realm, the very questions that once fueled our inner quests lose their grip: “Who am I?” becomes an echo without a source, a playful dance of consciousness without a questioner or an answer.

Here, the individual soul’s melody harmonizes with the universal symphony, and action arises from stillness, not strategy. The duality of self and other, spirit and matter, sacred and mundane, no longer confines. Everything is seen as an expression of the divine, and the divine is seen in everything.

The concept of “beyond enlightenment” invites us to explore a state where life is lived with an openness that requires no label, no status, and no fixed point of reference. It is a call to live deeply rooted in the mystery, to become the living expression of the question mark rather than the period at the end of a sentence.

In this sacred space beyond maps, we are each on an uncharted journey, a unique expression of life that never was before and never will be again. It is in this boundless realm that the enlightened mind, now free from the pursuit of enlightenment, can truly engage with the full spectrum of existence.

This is not a territory of more or better, but of true freedom—a freedom that comes not from reaching a destination, but from the realization that there was never anywhere to reach in the first place.

The Unfathomable Brahman

Exploring the Indivisible Reality from Multiple Perspectives

The quest to understand Brahman is a journey into the heart of existence itself, a pursuit that has intrigued philosophers, sages, and seekers for millennia. In the vast expanse of Hindu philosophy, Brahman is the ultimate reality, the fabric of all that exists and beyond. It is both immanent and transcendent, the core of our being and the cosmos. This exploration of Brahman from various perspectives—gross, subtle, causal, and nondual—invites us to expand our minds beyond the limits of ordinary perception.

**From the Gross Perspective: Brahman as the World**

When we look at Brahman from the gross perspective, we see the universe in all its material splendour. Here, Brahman is not an abstract concept but the physical universe that we interact with through our senses. It is the mountains, rivers, stars, and galaxies; the dance of creation and destruction visible to the naked eye. This manifestation is known as Saguna Brahman, the form with qualities, where the Divine is seen with attributes and forms, engaged in the act of creation.

**From the Subtle Perspective: Brahman as Consciousness**

Venture deeper, and we encounter the subtle perspective. Here, Brahman is the essence of consciousness that animates life. This is not the consciousness that fluctuates with our thoughts and feelings, but the pure awareness that observes, untouched and unchanging. This subtle Brahman also referred to as Nirguna Brahman, is without qualities, where God is not limited by any attributes. It is the silent witness to the play of the universe, the inner light that illuminates our experiences.

**From the Causal Perspective: Brahman as the Source**

Moving into the causal perspective, we touch on the very source of existence. Brahman here is the unseen cause behind everything—the seed from which the tree of the universe grows. This aspect of Brahman is deeply mysterious, for it is the origin of time, space, and causality itself. It is Avidya, ignorance, not in the sense of lack of knowledge, but as the primal forgetfulness that makes us perceive duality in the nondual.

**From the Nondual Perspective: Brahman as the One without a Second**

Finally, from the nondual perspective, Brahman is realized as the one without a second—Advaita. It is not a deity, not an entity, not even a ‘thing’ that can be comprehended by the intellect. It is the underlying oneness that pervades all dualities, where the seeker and the sought merge. In this view, the individual self (Atman) and the universal self (Brahman) are the same. All distinctions between creator and creation dissolve, revealing that there is nothing but Brahman—pure existence, consciousness, and bliss (Sat-Chit-Ananda).

This journey through the perspectives of Brahman reflects the layered depths of our existence. From the tangible reality of our day-to-day lives to the deepest spiritual realization, Brahman remains the unchanging truth. Each perspective is a step closer to the ultimate truth, leading us from the outward expressions of divinity to the profound inner revelation that we are, in essence, the infinite Brahman.

To understand Brahman is to expand our awareness across the spectrum of existence. The gross perspective roots us in our environment, the subtle unfolds the inner cosmos, the causal leads us to the primal source, and the nondual reveals our true infinite nature. In contemplating these perspectives, we may find that the journey to understand Brahman is not a journey outward but a profound voyage within, to the very core of who we are.

To Reach Beyond the Luminous

A Contemplation on Enlightenment and Distractions Along the Path

In our intrinsic pursuit of enlightenment, myriad entities, experiences, and spiritual phenomena often unveil themselves, presenting a paradoxical tapestry where understanding and distraction intertwine. When such entities or guides emerge along our path, they necessitate neither fixation nor rejection. For if they come, let them come, and if they decide to part, let them go. They are merely visitors, not permanent dwellers in our spiritual quest.

The venerable aphorism, “If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him,” underscores the necessity of liberating ourselves from attachments and anticipated experiences in our spiritual pursuit. For, anything that becomes an object, a tangible or conceptual entity in our path, is not the ultimate truth. Therein, even the luminous light, an experience that many consider synonymous with spiritual ascension, is merely an objective reality, one that still exists within the domain of duality and separation.

The spiritual path unfurls itself as a journey where psychic powers, or Siddhis, may develop. If they do, they are not to be clung to. Enlightenment is neither a culmination nor an accumulation of powers or experiences, but a transcendence that paradoxically both surpasses yet includes all phenomena. It is an unceasing journey toward non-duality, where there is no seer, no seen, and no seeing – only a unified, unblemished consciousness that permeates all.

Phenomena, be they seemingly mundane or extraordinarily mystical, are to be acknowledged, witnessed, and permitted to drift away without attachment or aversion. They are waves on the surface of the ocean of consciousness, significant in their momentary existence, yet ultimately rejoining the vast, undulating expanse from whence they came.

Our ego becomes the most subtle, pervasive, and potentially pernicious impediment in this spiritual journey. It distorts, distracts, and sometimes destructs, coaxing us into traps that appear as enlightening experiences. The seductive allure of these experiences has ensnared many seekers, captivating them in a web that is woven from the threads of spiritual materialism.

The aspiration is not to annihilate the senses but to transcend and include them, to experience them in their fullest, most vibrant expressions, and yet remain unbound by them. It is to dive deep into the very essence of existence until all dichotomies, dualities, and senses converge into a singular, unified experience where distinctions cease, and all that remains is the unbounded, immeasurable expanse of Being.

Hence, the spiritual path might be perceived not as an endeavour of attaining or achieving, but as a continuous unfolding of letting go, a perpetual surrender. For in this surrender, we do not become devoid or nihilistic, but rather, we open ourselves to the entirety of existence, unshielded and unbounded.

All is a dream within the mind of God, and you, the dreamer, are no distinct from the dream you conjure, for at the ultimate level of who and what you are, is even beyond the luminous, beyond objectivity. To witness without becoming witnessed, to experience without becoming experienced – this is the path to enlightenment, where letting go is the ultimate embrace.

Navigating the Infinite

My Deep Dive into Non-Duality and Absolute Monism

In the boundless journey of spiritual exploration, there are realms where the intellect bows to the profound experiences of the soul. During my dialogue with Steve James on Guru Viking, I ventured into the profound depths of non-duality and absolute monism, sharing experiences and realizations that have illuminated my path and understanding of the cosmos.

Non-duality, a state where the illusion of separateness dissolves into the boundless ocean of oneness, has been a pivotal aspect of my spiritual journey. It is a space where the dichotomies of self and other, subject and object, and observer and observed merge into a singular, unified existence. My experiences within this realm have not only been transformative but have also opened portals to deeper understanding and exploration of existence.

Absolute monism, on the other hand, is the philosophical perspective that everything emerges from and returns to a singular, absolute reality. It is a viewpoint that aligns seamlessly with my experiences of non-duality, where the myriad forms and phenomena of the universe are expressions of a singular, boundless reality.

In my explorations, I have navigated through different levels of non-duality, each revealing unique insights and perspectives on the nature of existence and consciousness. From the interconnectedness of all beings to the profound realization of the self as a manifestation of the infinite, each level of non-duality has been a step into deeper realms of understanding and perception.

One of the profound realizations that have emerged from my journey is that all perspectives on non-duality are valid. Each individual’s experiences and realizations are unique expressions of their journey through the infinite landscapes of consciousness. From the absolute monism that speaks of the oneness of existence to the diverse expressions of non-dual experiences, every perspective is a unique facet of the boundless crystal of reality.

The Eternal Observer

My Journey into the Unwavering State of Witness Consciousness

In the boundless journey of spiritual exploration, some moments etch themselves into the canvas of our being, becoming permanent markers that illuminate our path with unwavering light. During my conversation with Steve James on Guru Viking, I shared a glimpse into a pivotal moment in my journey – a permanent shift into the state of witness consciousness that has gracefully enveloped my being since 2008.

Witness consciousness, or the state of Sakshi Bhava in some spiritual traditions, is a state of neutral awareness, where the self transcends the transient and becomes an eternal observer, watching the unfolding of life with an unattached and unswayed presence. It is a space where the dichotomies of joy and sorrow, pain and pleasure, and acceptance and resistance dissolve into a serene flow of unbroken awareness.

In 2008, I experienced a profound shift, a gentle yet irrevocable transition into a state where there’s a witness, perpetually observing everything happen, from the mundane to the profound, with a tranquil and neutral awareness. This isn’t a detached state, but rather a deeply connected one, where the observer is not isolated from the observed but is intrinsically intertwined with it, observing not as a separate entity but as a unified presence.

This state of witness consciousness has been a serene guide through the tapestry of life, allowing me to navigate through the myriad of experiences, emotions, and moments with a steady and unbroken awareness. It has allowed me to engage with life, not as a fluctuating entity, swayed by the ebbs and flows, but as a stable presence, observing, engaging, and experiencing while remaining rooted in a tranquil state of being.

The journey with witness consciousness has been a dance of duality and non-duality, where the observer and the observed, while appearing distinct, are reflections of the same boundless existence. It is a space where life unfolds in its boundless expressions, observed by a stable, unswayed presence that is both immanent and transcendent.

The Tapestry of Oneness

My Journey Through Non-Duality and Its Life-Altering Echoes

In the boundless journey of spiritual exploration, some moments transcend words, where the self dissolves into an infinite expanse that is all-encompassing and deeply transformative. During my conversation with Steve James on Guru Viking, I touched upon such moments, sharing experiences of oneness and non-duality that have profoundly shaped my path and understanding of existence.

In those moments of non-duality, I found myself enveloped in a state where the boundaries that separate “me” from the “other” melted away, revealing a unified field of consciousness that permeates everything above, below, around, and within. It was an experience where I, as a separate entity, ceased to exist, and in place, there emerged a boundless oneness, connecting me to everything and everyone.

This realization of oneness and non-duality was not merely a transient experience but became a catalyst for significant changes in my life. One such transformation was my decision to abstain from eating meat, a choice deeply rooted in the interconnectedness I felt with all beings. When you experience the dissolution of separateness, causing harm to other beings becomes incongruent with the profound interconnectedness that is felt.

The experiences of oneness and non-duality are not merely philosophical concepts but are tangible experiences that permeate every aspect of being. They invite us to look at the world and other beings not as separate entities but as integral parts of the same tapestry of existence. It is a realization that every action, every choice, and every interaction is intertwined with the whole, influencing and being influenced by the boundless web of life.

Navigating through life with this understanding invites a shift in perspective, where actions are not driven by self-centred desires but are guided by a deep recognition of the interconnectedness of all life. It fosters a way of being that is rooted in compassion, understanding, and a genuine respect for all forms of life.

As I continue to walk this path, the experiences of oneness and non-duality serve as a compass, guiding my actions, interactions, and choices in a way that honours the interconnected tapestry of existence. It is a journey that is continuously unfolding, revealing deeper insights and understandings of the profound interconnectedness that weaves through all of existence.

The Unending Ascent

Embracing Continuous Learning and Growth Amidst Peaks of Consciousness

In the intricate tapestry of spiritual exploration, there exists a profound truth that often goes unspoken: the journey does not culminate at the peaks of consciousness but continues to weave through the valleys of continuous learning and growth. During my dialogue with Steve James on Guru Viking, I delved into this aspect, highlighting the perpetual nature of learning and psychological development, even amidst the high states of consciousness.

The journey towards enlightenment and higher states of consciousness is often perceived as an ascent towards a pinnacle, a final destination where one is imbued with all-knowing wisdom and eternal peace. However, my experiences and explorations have illuminated a different truth. Reaching high states of consciousness is not the end of the journey but a passage into deeper realms of continuous learning and psychological growth.

Despite experiencing moments where the self dissolves into the boundless ocean of consciousness, where the dichotomy of the observer and the observed collapses into oneness, there remains an ever-present opportunity for learning and growth. The experiences of non-duality and interconnectedness do not exempt us from the continuous evolution of our psychological and spiritual being.

In my journey, I have found that the peaks of consciousness open doors to deeper understanding and further questions, propelling the spirit into uncharted territories of the self and the universe. It is a realization that every moment, every experience, and every interaction is an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to delve deeper into our understanding of existence and our place within it.

The path is not linear, and the learning is not finite. Even amidst the profound experiences of oneness and elevated consciousness, there exist layers of the self, waiting to be explored, understood, and integrated. It is an invitation to look inward continuously, to explore the depths of our being, and to embrace the unending journey of learning and growth.

Unveiling My True Self

A Journey Through Enlightenment and Personality

Embarking on a spiritual journey often entails traversing through uncharted territories, and my journey, as shared in my interview with Steve James on Guru Viking, has been a testament to this exploration. My insights into the intertwining realms of enlightenment and personality have not only shaped my spiritual path but also opened a dialogue that is both philosophical and introspective: How does enlightenment manifest through the myriad of personalities?

My experiences, from navigating through the tumultuous waves of childhood trauma to experiencing peaks of spiritual awakenings, have been far from linear. The experiences of nonduality and oneness have been transformative, providing me with insights that challenge the conventional narratives surrounding enlightenment.

One pivotal realization that has emerged through my journey is that enlightenment does not obliterate personality. Rather, it illuminates it, allowing an individual to express their intrinsic personality traits without the constraints of ego or societal expectations. This realization prompts a cascade of questions: How does enlightenment, while navigating through the complexities of individual personalities, express itself authentically through inherent personality traits?

The concept that enlightenment can express itself through various personality types is not only intriguing but also dismantles the monolithic image of enlightened beings. It suggests that enlightenment does not coerce individuals into a singular archetype of serenity and equanimity. Instead, it allows one’s true nature to shine through, free from societal conditioning and self-limitation.

This perspective also fosters a compassionate viewpoint towards understanding and recognizing enlightenment in others. It suggests that enlightened beings may walk amongst us, expressing their spiritual realization through their unique personalities, which may not always conform to the stereotypical image of a serene, detached individual. It implies that an enlightened individual may laugh boisterously, engage passionately with the world, and express a spectrum of emotions, all while residing in a state of nondual awareness.

My insights invite contemplation: Have we encountered enlightened beings in our journey, unrecognized due to our preconceived notions of how they should express their realization? And how does this perspective influence our spiritual journey, knowing that enlightenment does not seek to change who we are, but rather to unveil our true nature in its purest form?

In the realm of spiritual exploration, where experiences often transcend language and conceptual understanding, my insights provide a fresh, inclusive, and deeply humane perspective on enlightenment. It invites us all to explore our spiritual path with authenticity, embracing our unique personalities as vehicles through which the enlightened state can express itself in the world.

Moksha

The Universe in Liberation

As we traverse the intricate corridors of Hindu philosophy, a term that emerges as a beacon of liberation is ‘Moksha’. This concept, commonly associated with individual salvation from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, presents a spiritual zenith. However, what if we zoom out from the individual perspective and consider Moksha at a cosmic level? What if the Universe itself were to attain Moksha?

The Big Bang marked the birth of the Universe, setting forth an infinite dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. Stars were born, galaxies sculpted, and planets formed, only to one day succumb to the grand design of entropy. This cyclical nature bears a striking resemblance to the cycle of Samsara in Hindu thought, where souls are continuously born and reborn in different forms until Moksha is achieved.

If the Universe could experience Moksha, it would transcend its cycle of cosmic Samsara – from the Big Bang to the eventual Big Crunch or Heat Death, depending on which theoretical physicist you ask. This liberation would mean breaking free from the constraints of time, space, and causality, reaching a state of infinite, timeless existence.

So, what would this feel like for the Universe?

When we ponder this question, we must acknowledge that the Universe’s experience, in this context, is beyond human comprehension. But let’s indulge in the thought experiment. We could imagine this state as one of perfect harmony and unity. There would be no ‘other’, no ‘alien’, and no ‘external’. The galaxies, stars, planets, and even the tiniest quantum particles would exist in a state of interconnection and oneness.

From the perspective of sentient beings, this would mean a profound sense of unity with everything else. Distinctions that currently cause division – species, races, cultures, even life and non-life – would become irrelevant. All of existence, inanimate and animate, would be seen as expressions of the same cosmic consciousness.

And yet, paradoxically, this unified existence would also mean the cessation of experience as we know it. Experience implies a subject and an object, an experiencer and the experienced. But in the absolute unity of cosmic Moksha, these dualities would dissolve. Therefore, in a sense, the Universe would be in a state of ‘experiencing without an experiencer’ or ‘knowing without a knower’.

In the grand scheme of cosmic liberation, human Moksha could be seen as a fractal microcosm – a ripple that mirrors the pattern of the whole. Each being achieving liberation contributes to the whole Universe moving towards its own Moksha, its release from the cosmic cycle of birth and death. This profound realization places our spiritual quests in a broader context and imbues them with a universal significance.

However, the implications of this concept are not just metaphysical, but deeply ethical. Recognizing our shared journey toward liberation fosters compassion, humility, and a sense of stewardship for all of existence. Our actions, in this view, can either facilitate or hinder the Universe’s journey toward Moksha.

In conclusion, contemplating Moksha at a universal scale stretches the boundaries of our imagination and empathy. It invites us to view ourselves not as isolated entities but as integral parts of a grand cosmic dance seeking the ultimate liberation.

A Meeting of East and West

Advaita Vedanta and Ken Wilber’s Four Quadrants

As we navigate through life’s labyrinth, we encounter myriad philosophical viewpoints designed to offer us clarity about the nature of reality. Two such perspectives – one rooted in ancient Eastern spirituality, Advaita Vedanta, and the other a more contemporary Western theory, Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory – provide us with intriguing interpretive lenses. While appearing distinct, when juxtaposed, they unfold a captivating dialogue, revealing the interconnectedness of diverse paths of wisdom.

**Non-Duality: The Heart of Advaita Vedanta**

At the core of Advaita Vedanta lies the profound principle of non-duality. The term ‘Advaita’ translates to ‘not two’, pointing towards the notion of unity beneath apparent multiplicity. According to this philosophy, all phenomena – whether perceived as separate entities or diverse experiences – are manifestations of a singular absolute reality known as Brahman.

This philosophy posits that the perceived distinction between the individual self (Atman) and the ultimate reality (Brahman) is an illusion (Maya), born out of ignorance (Avidya). The journey of spiritual awakening in Advaita Vedanta is about transcending this illusion, recognizing the non-dual nature of existence, where the Atman and Brahman are not separate but one.

**Ken Wilber’s Four Quadrants: A Comprehensive Map of Reality**

Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory, particularly the Four Quadrants model, offers a different but complementary perspective. Wilber presents a holistic map of reality, dividing it into four quadrants: Individual Interior (consciousness), Individual Exterior (behaviour), Collective Interior (culture), and Collective Exterior (society). Each quadrant represents an integral part of our existence and must be considered to understand reality holistically.

**The Interplay: Advaita Vedanta and Four Quadrants**

Drawing parallels between Advaita Vedanta and the Four Quadrants can create a fascinating synthesis of Eastern and Western thought.

The Upper Left Quadrant (Individual-Interior) aligns with the individual’s subjective experience, mirroring the Advaita exploration of Atman. The Upper Right Quadrant (Individual-Exterior) encapsulates the physical manifestation of the individual, aligning with the Advaita concept that even our physical existence is a manifestation of Brahman.

The Lower Left Quadrant (Collective-Interior) represents shared beliefs and cultures, resonating with the Advaita perspective that cultural differences are superficial, and at a deeper level, unity prevails. The Lower Right Quadrant (Collective-Exterior) mirrors societal structures, all manifestations of the same non-dual reality.

From the Advaita viewpoint, the division of the four quadrants are themselves expressions of Maya, as they create apparent separations where none ultimately exist. They are valuable tools for understanding and navigating the world but do not represent the deepest truth of non-duality.

**Uniting Perspectives: A Path to Enlightenment**

Exploring the intersection of Advaita Vedanta and Ken Wilber’s Four Quadrants offers a richer understanding of reality, harmonizing subjective and objective, individual and collective, Eastern spirituality and Western theory. As we understand that the lines dividing these quadrants are more porous than they seem, we move closer to the non-dual truth of Advaita – that beneath apparent diversity, unity pervades.

At a time when division and fragmentation are rampant, this synthesis could offer a path toward the kind of transcendental insight that can bridge divides, fostering a deeper sense of interconnectedness and wholeness. After all, as Advaita Vedanta teaches us, beneath the surface of multiplicity, we are ‘not two’ but one. As we embrace the wisdom of the four quadrants, we might just find ourselves taking a step closer to that unity, opening ourselves to a richer, more holistic understanding of the world.
