Admiring Her Beauty Without the Need to Possess It
She stood before you—radiant, complete, untouched by your desire. You saw her beauty not as something to claim but something to witness. No attempt to preserve it. No hunger to prolong the moment. Just presence.
This is the essence of non-attachment. The ability to recognize the luminous without needing to make it yours. To love deeply without ownership. To appreciate fully without clinging. To admire, and then walk away—not because you don’t care, but because you’ve seen clearly.
Desire often masquerades as appreciation. It sneaks in, subtle at first, until the gaze becomes gripping. The mind begins to script stories: how it could be, how it should be, how it must be. But true seeing requires no continuation. It is complete in its own silence.
Beauty invites reverence, not possession. When you see her—whatever or whatever she is—truly see her. Let that moment be enough. Let the gaze be unpolluted by longing. Let the love be real because it is free.
To walk away isn’t abandonment. It is freedom for both the viewer and the viewed. There is no trace left behind. No emotional residue. Just the echo of a sacred glimpse, unbroken by need.
And isn’t that the deepest form of intimacy? To allow something or someone to remain what they are, without the distortion of your grasp?
Non-attachment does not dim the light of love; it refines it. It teaches the heart how to hold everything while clinging to nothing. It teaches the soul how to dance with impermanence, and still call it sacred.
Sometimes the most awakened gesture isn’t to stay, or to reach, or to take—but simply to witness beauty… and bow.

In the spiritual awakening journey, there is a well-known saying: “Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.” This aphorism captures the essence of a profound transformation that occurs not in the realm of actions but in the realm of perception.
Before enlightenment, we engage with the world through a dualistic lens. Wood is simply wood, and water is merely water. Our actions are routine, grounded in the practical necessities of life. We chop wood to build fires, and we carry water to quench our thirst. The world is divided into distinct entities and tasks, each with its purpose and function.
However, with the dawning of enlightenment, a radical shift in perspective occurs. Once seen as separate objects, the wood and water are now perceived as the divine. Every action, whether chopping wood or carrying water, becomes an act of communion with the sacred. The distinction between the doer and the deed dissolves, revealing the inherent unity of all existence.
This newfound vision unveils a profound truth: God is not a distant, separate entity but is every aspect of the universe. The wood we chop, the water we carry, the tools we use, and even the hands that perform these actions are not only expressions of the divine but are the divine. This realization transforms mundane tasks into sacred rituals, imbued with deep reverence, interconnectedness and beyond.
The environment in which these actions take place also becomes a sacred space. The forest where we gather wood, the river from which we draw water, and the air we breathe are all seen as the divine presence. Every element of our surroundings is woven into the fabric of oneness, blurring the lines between the individual and the cosmos.
This shift in perspective does not alter the actions themselves. We still chop wood and carry water, fulfilling the same physical tasks as before. Yet, the awareness that everything is as is infused these actions with a sense of purpose and meaning that transcends the ordinary.
In this enlightened state, the simplicity of life is revealed in its most profound form. Each moment becomes an opportunity to experience the divine, to engage in a continuous dialogue with the universe. The mundane is elevated to the extraordinary, and every action becomes an expression of love and devotion.
Ultimately, enlightenment is not about escaping the world or renouncing our daily responsibilities. It is about transforming our perception, recognizing the sacredness in every aspect of life, and understanding that we are the intricate, divine dance. By embracing this perspective, we find a deeper sense of peace and fulfillment, knowing that every action, no matter how simple, is an act of communion with the divine, as the divine.

In the labyrinth of existence, we often perceive ourselves as isolated entities navigating a myriad of external circumstances. Yet, beneath this surface, lies an essential truth: wherever essence is, you are. And wherever you are, only essence remains. This statement is not merely a poetic abstraction but a profound reflection on the nature of reality and our place within it.
Essence, in this context, refers to the fundamental nature of existence. It is the unchanging, underlying reality that permeates all forms and phenomena. It is the substratum of being, the silent witness to all experiences, and the ultimate source from which everything arises and to which everything returns. We begin to see the world through a different lens when we recognize that essence is our true nature.
Our usual mode of perception is dualistic. We see ourselves as separate from the world, creating a dichotomy between self and other, subject and object. This dualistic perception leads to a sense of isolation and disconnection, fueling a continuous search for meaning and fulfillment in the external world. However, when we shift our awareness to the essence, we realize this separation is illusory.
Wherever essence is, you are. This means that our true identity is not confined to the physical body or the individual mind. It is the essence itself, which is infinite and boundless. This essence is present in every moment, in every experience, and every being. It transcends the limitations of time and space, uniting all existence in a seamless whole.
And wherever you are, only essence remains. This implies that in the ultimate analysis, all distinctions and differences dissolve into the unity of essence. The various forms and phenomena we perceive are simply expressions of this one essence. When we look beyond the surface appearances, we see that everything is interconnected and interdependent, arising from and returning to the same source.
This understanding has profound implications for our daily lives. It invites us to shift our focus from the transient to the eternal, from the superficial to the profound. By recognizing our true nature as essence, we can experience a sense of peace and fulfillment that is not dependent on external circumstances. We become more compassionate and empathetic, seeing ourselves in others and others in ourselves.
Moreover, this recognition of essence can transform our relationship with the world. We begin to see the divine in everything and everyone, honouring the sacredness of all existence. This shift in perception fosters a sense of reverence and gratitude, leading to more harmonious and sustainable ways of living.
In essence, recognizing the unity of essence and existence is a journey of awakening. It is a shift from the fragmented perception of the ego to the holistic vision of the true self. It is an invitation to live in alignment with the deeper reality of our being, experiencing the boundless joy and freedom that comes from knowing that wherever essence is, you are. And wherever you are, only essence remains.

“See God in all faces, places, and empty spaces” is an invitation to recognize the divine presence in every aspect of existence. This perspective encourages a profound shift in how we perceive the world, inviting us to see beyond the superficial and appreciate the sacredness that permeates all things.
Faces Seeing God in all faces means acknowledging the inherent divinity within every person we encounter. It is a call to look beyond differences in appearance, culture, or belief, and to recognize the shared essence that connects us all. This recognition fosters empathy, compassion, and a deeper sense of unity, as we see each individual as an expression of the divine.
Places When we see God in all places, we cultivate a sense of reverence for our surroundings. Whether in nature, urban environments, or our homes, this perspective encourages us to find beauty and sacredness everywhere. It prompts us to treat our environment with respect and gratitude, understanding that every place is a manifestation of the divine presence.
Empty Spaces Seeing God in empty spaces invites us to appreciate the silence, stillness, and potential that exist in the gaps and voids of our lives. These spaces are not merely absences but are pregnant with possibility and the unmanifest potential from which all creation arises. By embracing these empty spaces, we learn to find peace in stillness and to trust in the unfolding of life’s inherent wisdom.
Integrating This Perspective To truly embody this perspective, one must cultivate mindfulness and an open heart. Practicing presence in each moment, we can begin to see the interconnectedness and the divine thread that weaves through all of existence. This practice transforms our perception, allowing us to live with greater joy, peace, and a deep sense of belonging.
By seeing God in all faces, places, and empty spaces, we align ourselves with a higher understanding of unity and divine presence. This shift not only enriches our spiritual journey but also enhances our interactions with the world, inspiring us to live with compassion, respect, and a profound appreciation for the sacredness of life.

In our conversation on the Guru Viking podcast, hosted by Steve James, the essence of giving and receiving was explored in a way that transcends the mundane understanding of these acts. Our discussion, titled “Bodhi in the Brain,” delved into the philosophical underpinnings of our existence and our intrinsic connection to the universe. The narrative unfolded a perspective that not only are we a part of the universe, but we are the universe itself, engaging in a perpetual dance of giving and receiving.
The act of giving and receiving is not merely a transaction, but a reflection of a deeper, cosmic reality. When we give, we are not parting with something; rather, we are circulating the essence of existence. Similarly, when we receive, we are not merely acquiring; we are resonating with the universal rhythm. This perspective elevates the act of giving and receiving from a mere transaction to a transcendental experience, a harmonious exchange between the self and the cosmos.
The breath serves as a poignant metaphor for this eternal exchange. With every inhalation, we receive the life force, and with every exhalation, we give back to the existence that cradles us. This rhythmic exchange is a reminder of our unbreakable bond with the universe. It’s a dance of energy, a flow of consciousness, a cycle that sustains life and fosters the continuum of existence.
The notion that “it’s better to give than to receive” is not just a moral stance, but a reflection of a higher truth. When we give selflessly, we align with the universal law of abundance. We acknowledge that we are not separate entities operating in isolation, but integral parts of a grand cosmic orchestra. Our acts of giving and receiving are not just interactions with the external world; they are a dialogue with the universe, a testament to our universal identity.
Furthermore, the idea that “the universe is always yours” is a profound reminder of our limitless potential and inherent unity with the cosmos. We are not mere spectators in this grand theatre of existence; we are the playwrights, the actors, and the audience. The universe is not an external entity; it is a reflection of our innermost being, a mirror of our infinite essence.
This dialogue on the Guru Viking podcast invites you to transcend the superficial understanding of giving and receiving, urging us to embrace our universal identity. It’s a call to engage in the cosmic dance with awareness, grace, and a sense of sacredness. As we give and receive, we do not just interact with the world; we commune with the universe, we resonate with the essence of existence, and we unveil the profound truth that we are the universe experiencing itself in a myriad of forms.
This perspective is not merely philosophical musing; it’s a pathway to a deeper understanding, a higher consciousness, and a more meaningful existence. As we navigate the journey of life with this awareness, every act of giving and receiving becomes a sacred exchange, a step closer to the ultimate realization of our oneness with the cosmos.
