The Mind is Samsara

Liberation Through Freedom From Thought

(Inspired by Delson Armstrong)

To grasp the nature of samsara, one must look no further than the ever-turning wheel of the mind. Thoughts arise and dissolve ceaselessly—ideas, beliefs, fears, and anticipations weaving an endless narrative. Each moment feels distinct, yet they are all threads of the same cyclical pattern. This mental turbulence is the very fabric of samsara, the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth experienced not only across lifetimes but also within the subtle rhythms of the mind.

Samsara is not a place. It is the identification with thought itself. Every belief we cling to, every concept we hold sacred, every doubt that gnaws at our certainty—these perpetuate the illusion of separateness. The mind clings to forms, seeking permanence in the impermanent, building castles on clouds. Yet each construction inevitably crumbles, and the cycle begins anew.

Nirvana, often misinterpreted as a distant goal, is not found outside this moment. It is recognizing what remains when all that is transient falls away. Freedom arises not through force or suppression but by witnessing the mind’s movements without becoming entangled. The arising and dissolving of thoughts are no longer resisted; they are observed as passing clouds in the vast sky of awareness.

This realization does not destroy the mind but recontextualizes it. Thoughts may continue to arise, but they no longer hold the power to bind. The very root of suffering—attachment to the mind’s constructs—is severed. What remains is pure Being, an effortless silence that neither clings to birth nor fears death.

To step off the wheel of samsara is to recognize that you were never bound. The liberation of nirvana is not an escape but a profound shift in perspective: to see thoughts for what they are—fleeting phenomena—and rest in the unchanging awareness that witnesses them.

The mind is samsara. Freedom lies not in battling it, but in transcending it through direct experience of your timeless nature.

One Taste

Savouring the Infinite Donut of the Universe

There’s a flavour so profound, so complete, that a single bite satisfies every craving. Mystics call it “One Taste.” It’s the ultimate donut—shaped as a torus, mirroring the infinite, self-sustaining design of the universe itself. One bite of this cosmic delicacy and the hunger for more dissolve forever.

The torus represents the flow of all existence. Energy moves outward from the center, loops around, and folds back into itself—a continuous, unbroken cycle. Life itself arises and returns through this geometry, reflecting the interconnected nature of all things. When you take that metaphysical bite, it’s not just a snack; it’s communion with the whole.

The Flavour Beyond Flavour

This donut isn’t ordinary. It isn’t made of flour, sugar, or butter; it’s composed of awareness, presence, and unity. That first bite unveils the truth that all flavours—whether bitter or sweet, spicy or bland—are variations of one eternal essence.

You don’t just taste it; you become it. This realization dissolves the endless craving for more, the need to acquire, achieve, or complete. One bite and the existential hunger that drives human striving come to a halt. You’re no longer searching for fulfillment because you’ve already discovered that you are fulfillment.

The Geometry of Wholeness

The torus is a profound metaphor for life’s completeness. Everything flows from the center, and everything returns to it. This shape is mirrored in the structure of galaxies, the energy fields of the Earth, and even the patterns of human consciousness. Taking that first bite reveals that the “self” and the “universe” are not separate entities but expressions of one unified flow.

Once this truth is seen, nothing is ever the same. Life continues as it always has, but the endless striving for meaning and satisfaction falls away. The bite grants freedom, not by adding anything new, but by revealing what was always present: the infinite within the finite.

Beyond the Hunger

This realization doesn’t strip life of its richness; it enhances it. You’ll still savour the sweetness of love, the tang of sorrow, and the spice of adventure, but you’ll no longer mistake these flavours for something separate from yourself. The donut is no longer outside you; it’s everything you’ve ever been.

Craving transforms into gratitude. Striving gives way to stillness. You taste each moment fully, knowing that the universe itself is unfolding through you.

Why You’ll Never Have to Eat Again

One bite of this donut doesn’t mean rejecting life. It means living with such profound intimacy that every experience, no matter how ordinary, carries the flavour of infinity. This isn’t about ascetic denial or detachment—it’s about tasting the sacred in every breath, step, and interaction.

When you’ve tasted the ultimate donut, hunger ceases because there’s nothing left to grasp. Fulfillment isn’t in the future; it’s here. Every moment is saturated with the One Taste, echoing the truth that you and the universe are the same.

Take that bite, and savour it. Everything you’ve ever sought is already within it.

The Journey of the Mind

Beyond Ego’s Boundaries

Human consciousness, unbound by the constraints of ordinary thought, possesses an intrinsic ability to transcend the familiar territory of the ego. This journey to higher states unfolds as a delicate dance, one where the ego—the personality construct and guardian of perceived separateness—is bypassed, leaving room for profound shifts in awareness.

These elevated states of mind, accessible yet elusive, represent realms where the habitual identity fades into the background. Here, one finds insights that ripple with clarity, and a sense of unity that dissolves the divisions the ego so meticulously maintains. The journey to these states does not require the ego’s consent, nor can it be negotiated through the ego’s language. Instead, it is a surrender, a quiet movement beyond identity, like slipping into a vast ocean where the waves of self-constructed limitations fade.

The ego functions as a structure, defining and separating, fostering individual identity, and distinguishing between ‘self’ and ‘other.’ But, ironically, the very mechanisms that help navigate daily life can often restrict our capacity for profound insight. The ego’s grip can be like a thin film that obscures the brilliance beyond, drawing boundaries around our perceptions and experiences. However, consciousness itself possesses a deeper intelligence—one that intuitively senses these confines and seeks to transcend them.

Through this transcendence, higher states are realized: states where intuition, compassion, and expansive perception prevail. These states are not bound by logic or reason, nor are they controlled by the ego’s protective narratives. Instead, they blossom as expressions of something deeper, a truth beyond the rational mind. In these realms, individuals might experience spontaneous creativity, profound calm, or insights that cannot be traced back to ordinary patterns of thought.

This movement beyond ego can occur in many ways. Moments of silence, stillness, meditation, or even being fully absorbed in creative expression, allow us to slip beyond the ego’s hold. What emerges is a consciousness that witnesses without interference—a state of pure observation, where clarity dawns without the coloration of past experiences, conditioning, or future anxieties.

Ironically, in relinquishing the need to control or grasp, we find a more profound mastery. The mind, left to its natural course, attains heights the ego could never imagine. The ego tries to navigate life by holding on, defining, and categorizing, yet the higher mind finds meaning in spaciousness, in a form of understanding that defies containment.

This journey invites a letting go, not to become less, but to become whole. Every step taken without ego’s agenda becomes an invitation to experience life as it truly is—unfiltered, unfragmented, and undeniably interconnected. What emerges is a state of mind where one feels profoundly connected to all that is, free from the need to prove, to defend, or to possess.

In this light, our consciousness rises naturally to meet the deeper realms of existence, not as something earned or achieved but as something rediscovered—a return to our true nature, unburdened by the masks we have accumulated. The mind knows this path intuitively, flowing into these higher states with grace when we allow it to be free from the ego’s constraints. And in that freedom, a profound sense of peace, insight, and unity emerges, inviting us to live with a renewed sense of purpose, clarity, and wholeness.

In addition to my cover feature, I’m excited to share that my second article with Brainz Magazine, titled “What Is Nonduality and Why Is It So Misunderstood?”, is now live. Nonduality is a concept that resonates deeply within spiritual traditions and personal awakening journeys. However, it’s often misunderstood as simply a philosophical idea or something intangible. In this article, I explore nonduality as an experiential truth—one that reveals the fundamental unity underlying all things.

One Heartbeat…One Thousand Thoughts

Consider the heartbeat: a steady, rhythmic pulse that carries the force of life through every cell of your being. Within each beat lies an unseen multitude, a vast array of thoughts—fleeting, overlapping, and often unnoticed. This single moment, this solitary beat contains within it the energy of a thousand thoughts, each connected to the next, creating the internal world we navigate daily.

Thoughts rush like a river, surging with desires, fears, memories, and plans. Yet, they are barely registered before the next wave crashes. The heartbeat, however, remains a constant companion, reminding us that a profound stillness exists beneath the surface of our scattered minds.

It is within this space—the pause between heartbeats—that clarity can emerge. As our awareness deepens, we recognize that the mind’s racing thoughts are but ripples on the ocean of our being. We are not the thoughts themselves but the consciousness that observes them. By aligning with the heartbeat rather than the noise of the mind, we begin to see beyond the clutter of mental activity, into the spacious awareness where thoughts dissolve and presence shines.

A single heartbeat holds the potential for transformation, for within that beat is the opportunity to disengage from the frantic movement of thought and return to the grounded essence of who we are. Thought is not the enemy, but its sheer volume often drowns out the wisdom that whispers between the beats.

This shift, from identifying with thought to residing in awareness, is subtle but profound. It reveals that while a thousand thoughts may pass through our minds, they are transient. The heartbeat, however, is the rhythm of life itself, a steady pulse guiding us toward presence. Here lies a truth often overlooked: life happens not in the storm of thoughts, but in the quiet between them.

The next time your mind feels overwhelmed, listen to your heartbeat. Allow yourself to rest in the awareness that arises in its rhythm. Watch as the thousand thoughts lose their hold, and the simplicity of being takes centre stage. This is the essence of spiritual awakening—a return to the heart, where a thousand thoughts collapse into one still, eternal presence.

Beyond Illusion

Discovering the Space Between

The mind creates identities and builds a sense of self out of thoughts, emotions, and past experiences. These constructs shape beliefs around who you think you are and who you think you aren’t. This entire narrative, though compelling, is merely a distortion. It presents itself as reality but, in truth, is nothing more than an intricate mental creation. We become confined by these polarities, oscillating between two extremes—what we accept and what we reject about ourselves.

These boundaries, however, do not define the core of who you are. The sense of self emerges as a reflection against what we perceive as the ‘other.’ You’re not merely the collection of traits you cherish, nor are you the shadow aspects you struggle to suppress. By engaging with either, you remain caught in a dualistic view that blinds you to your deeper essence.

The challenge, then, is to neither grasp onto one identity nor to strive to become its opposite, but to look at the liminal space between. This uncharted territory holds the key to your True Self. Neither glorified nor condemned, this space is untouched by labels. It eludes all attempts to be defined. When you gaze into that emptiness, you come face-to-face with your origin—the point where being meets non-being, and you witness the dissolution of the false dichotomy between ‘I am this’ and ‘I am not that.’

Finding this space requires surrendering the tendency to categorize. Allow awareness to rest on the edges of thought, where opposites fade into one another. This subtle recognition can shift perception, making you aware of a silent presence that underlies all identifications. It’s a sense of being that defies expression yet is undeniably real. Here, you aren’t bound by limitations, nor are you an idealized version of yourself.

This presence is what mystics have pointed to throughout the ages—a place beyond words and mental constructs. It’s here that the True Self emerges, not as a separate entity, but as the unconditioned awareness that holds both the ‘you’ and the ‘not you.’ Let this realization transform the way you see yourself and others, dissolving barriers until all that remains is a boundless, indivisible field of consciousness.

The Paradox of a Spiritually Enlightened Peak Experience

Imagine being pushed from a plane mid-flight, without a parachute. There’s no time to think, no time to brace yourself for impact. You are hurtling through the sky, weightless, untethered, and completely vulnerable. Fear may grip you momentarily, but something unexpected happens. You hit the ground—yet not only do you survive, but you rise and walk away unscathed, untouched by the experience as if the fall was merely an illusion.

This analogy comes close to capturing the essence of a fully spiritually enlightened peak experience. It is both terrifying and liberating, a moment where everything you thought you knew is shattered, yet something deeper emerges untouched. It’s not the kind of experience that fits neatly into the confines of logic or the safety of intellectual understanding. It pulls you beyond those limits, forcing you to confront the raw truth of existence in ways you hadn’t anticipated.

During such an experience, there’s no parachute to cushion the ego’s fall. The self—the constructed identity you’ve held onto for so long—dissolves, leaving nothing to cling to. Everything you believe about who you are, what reality is, and how life works evaporates in a moment of pure awareness. But instead of devastation, there is a strange sense of freedom. You realize the ground you thought you were plummeting toward was never real, to begin with.

What’s remarkable about this peak state is how it feels after. There’s a profound sense of survival, not in the physical sense, but at the level of awareness. You walk away from the experience unscathed because the true self, the part of you that is beyond mind and body, was never at risk. The fall, the impact, and the survival all exist within the realm of the illusion, but the awareness that experiences it all remains whole and untouched.

This awakening doesn’t come gently; it forces a reckoning with reality. But through that reckoning, you realize that what is truly real cannot be harmed. The body, the ego, the mind—all of these can be torn apart by life’s challenges and transformations. But the awareness that witnesses the fall? That remains pure and intact.

Living after such an experience brings with it a lightness, a profound sense of detachment that doesn’t arise from apathy but from clarity. You’ve seen through the illusion of the fall, and now, you move through life knowing that no matter what happens, the essence of who you are remains untouched. There’s nothing left to fear, no more clinging to the safety of the mind’s constructions.

This is the gift of spiritual enlightenment: not just the revelation that you can survive the fall, but the deeper realization that there was never anything to fall from in the first place.

The Miraculous Nature of Satori and the Beauty of the Mundane

Satori, that sudden flash of insight, is not the kind of experience that can be prepared for or understood through mere intellectual exercise. It arrives unexpectedly, sweeping through consciousness like a cool breeze amid the summer heat. It’s as if all boundaries collapse, leaving only pure awareness. And it’s at that moment you realize—nothing is truly separate.

This fleeting yet profound glimpse into the fabric of reality shifts one’s perception permanently. Suddenly, the noise of daily life quiets. The weight of things that once seemed so important dissolves, revealing a serene clarity always there, patiently waiting. After experiencing Satori, a miraculous paradox unfolds—life doesn’t feel distant or otherworldly. Instead, the mundane becomes extraordinary.

Consider the sensation of holding a cup of tea. Before Satori, you might focus on the cup’s warmth or the taste of the liquid. After Satori, you might find yourself marvelling at the simple act itself. Each sip becomes a universe in motion, rich with presence and deep appreciation. Ordinary moments, once taken for granted, now glow with the same brilliance as those rare flashes of enlightenment.

Satori isn’t about escaping the ordinary; it’s about seeing the divine within it. Whether it’s the rustle of leaves in the wind or the sound of laughter echoing through the air, the smallest details become pathways to the infinite. There is no longer a need to search for meaning elsewhere; everything, as it is, reflects the sacred nature of existence.

The true gift of Satori lies not in the experience itself, but in its ability to transform our relationship with life. It teaches us that miracles aren’t somewhere out there, waiting to be discovered—they are embedded in the fabric of each moment, no matter how small or ordinary.

Suddenly, every breath, every heartbeat, every sensation becomes an invitation to return to that space of awareness. And it’s this quiet reverence for the mundane that truly allows one to live fully, with grace and wonder.

The Silent Revolution

Awakening Amidst Chaos

Chaos and tranquility often seem like opposites. However, they are intimately linked in the dance of life. As the world spins ever faster, with crises emerging like sudden storms on a summer day, a silent revolution is brewing beneath the surface—one that is neither loud nor confrontational but profoundly transformative.

This quiet revolution doesn’t rely on grand gestures or sweeping movements. It starts within the hearts of individuals who, despite the world’s noise, have tapped into a deeper current of awareness. These individuals aren’t driven by the need to change the world through force or ideology. Instead, they embody a shift that occurs when one aligns with the innate wisdom that lies beyond thought, beyond fear, and beyond the endless distractions that dominate modern life.

Imagine a moment where the rush of daily life pauses—not because external circumstances have shifted, but because the internal landscape has transformed. This shift is not the result of escaping the world, but of embracing it fully, with all its imperfections, recognizing that within the chaos lies the seed of order. When one looks deeply into the heart of the turmoil, an unexpected clarity can emerge, revealing the profound interconnectedness of all things.

Such moments of awakening are not reserved for the select few, nor do they require years of preparation or ascetic withdrawal from life. Often, they arrive unexpectedly, during the most mundane tasks or amid personal challenges. What matters is not the circumstances but the openness to receive what is always present: the silent awareness that underlies all experience.

This awareness doesn’t impose itself; it simply waits to be noticed. When recognized, it offers a perspective that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, where the boundaries between self and other dissolve, revealing a reality that is both deeply personal and universally shared.

The implications of this shift are profound. As more individuals awaken to this silent awareness, the collective consciousness begins to change. Actions rooted in fear and separation give way to those motivated by compassion and unity. Societal change, once thought to be driven by external forces, starts to emerge organically, from the inside out.

The silent revolution is not about overthrowing systems or confronting power. It is about the gradual realization that true power lies in the ability to remain anchored in awareness, no matter the external circumstances. This power is subtle, yet its impact can be far-reaching. As each person awakens, the collective vibration shifts, creating ripples that extend far beyond individual lives.

In times of chaos, this inner revolution offers a way forward—not by avoiding the challenges of the world, but by embracing them with a new understanding. It is the recognition that every moment, no matter how chaotic, holds the potential for awakening. When approached with awareness, even the most difficult experiences can become opportunities for profound growth and transformation.

This silent revolution is happening now, within the hearts of many. It doesn’t make headlines or trend on social media, but its effects are felt everywhere. The world is changing, not through external force, but through the quiet, steady awakening of consciousness.

A-Dual to Dual to Nondual

The Evolution of Consciousness

The evolution of consciousness from a-dual to dual to nondual mirrors the profound journey of human development and spiritual awakening. This path reflects the unfolding of awareness from the pure, undifferentiated state of infancy, through the complexities of duality, and ultimately to the profound realization of nonduality.

The A-Dual State: The Innocence of a Newborn

A newborn baby embodies the a-dual state—a condition of pure, undivided awareness. In this state, there is no sense of separation; the infant exists in a realm of unity where distinctions between self and other, subject and object, have not yet formed. The newborn’s consciousness is a reflection of the primal unity of existence, an experience of pure presence and potential.

The Emergence of Duality: The World of Distinctions

As the child grows, the consciousness transitions into the dual state. This is the realm where the distinctions and separations that characterize our daily lives begin to emerge. The child starts to recognize the difference between self and other, experiencing the world as a collection of distinct objects and entities. This dualistic perception is essential for navigating and understanding the complexities of life.

In the dual state, we develop our sense of identity and individuality. We learn to interact with the world, to differentiate between pleasure and pain, success and failure, love and fear. However, this separation can also lead to feelings of isolation, conflict, and a sense of being incomplete.

The Nondual Realization: The Return to Unity

A full spiritual awakening marks the transition from dual to nondual consciousness. This realization transcends the distinctions of duality, revealing the underlying unity of all existence. In the nondual state, the boundaries between self and other dissolve, and we perceive the interconnectedness of all things.

Nondual awareness is the recognition that the multiplicity of forms and phenomena are expressions of a single, boundless reality. It is an experience of profound unity where the apparent separations of duality are seen as illusory. This realization brings a deep sense of peace, compassion, and unconditional love, as we understand that we are part of a greater whole.

Embracing the Journey

The journey from a-dual to dual to nondual is not a linear path but a continuous unfolding of consciousness. It invites us to embrace the innocence of the a-dual state, navigate the complexities of duality, and ultimately awaken to the nondual realization. This journey encourages us to live with mindfulness, recognizing the sacredness in every moment and every experience.

By understanding and embracing this evolutionary process, we can navigate life with greater wisdom and grace. We learn to hold the paradoxes of existence, finding harmony in the interplay of opposites. This path is not about escaping the world but engaging with it more deeply, with an open heart and a clear mind.

The evolution of consciousness from a-dual to dual to nondual offers a profound framework for understanding our spiritual journey. It reminds us that beyond the apparent separations lies a deeper truth—a truth that can transform our perception and inspire us to live with greater compassion, wisdom, and love.
